Description
Analytical separations of monosaecharides and oligosaccharides have been achieved by a number of methods including liquid chromatography on paper, thin layers, charcoal columns, ion-exchange resin columns, and gas-liquid chromatography on a variety of liquid phases on solid supports. Of these methods, two of the most versatile have proved to be ion-exchange chromatography (Vol. VI [9]) and gas-liquid chromatography; their various forms are reviewed annually (7). Whereas these two techniques have both different and common advantages, in much of the analytical work of analysis of free monosaecharides and smaller oligosaccharides, liquid phase ion-exchange chromatography is convenient since samples in solution can be loaded directly without prepreparation, derivatization, or removal of aqueous solvent.
